Snowbombing set to go off on Sun Peaks this weekend

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — One of the biggest events of the Sun Peaks calendar year is set to explode on the mountain resort this weekend.

Snowbombing enters its third year on Tod Mountain promising its biggest party yet.

Chief Marketing Officer Aidan Kelly says about 3,000 people have already bought tickets or secured accomodations, but he expects that number to balloon in the coming days.

“There are a lot of last-minute sales that are flowing in,” said Kelly. “Then you’ve got all the locals who are sort of on the periphery a little bit. They dip their toe in the water for a day here and there… just check it out as it’s going on. It does make for a busy weekend. We’ll have upwards of 5,000 people milling around the resort.”

The music and winter sports event began in Europe 20 years ago, debuting in Canada at Sun Peaks in 2017.

Kelly says the resort is getting the hang of hosting the bash every spring.

“It gets a little bit easier in some regards, because it’s not our first rodeo, so to speak. So there are certain elements that we have nailed down and we kind of know what to expect. We know what kind of crowd we’ll be dealing with and how the event has gone over the last few years, so that helps with preparations,” said Kelly.

“With the way that the weather has been over the last month, it’s kind of helped out a little bit in the base area, to prepare the sites and the venues. We’re expecting a bunch of fun. The feedback from the first two years of the event has been really, really good. We’re anticipating the same thing again for year three.”

Even in the few short years Snowbombing has called Sun Peaks home, it has made an impression on festival-goers.

“Anytime you’re bringing that number of people in… and also what it means for the resort – not just for the people who are attending the event and the business that brings, but also the profile and the reputation of the resort,” said Kelly. “There are a lot of people who learn about Sun Peaks because of Snowbombing.”

Kelly says there’s nowhere to go but up for Snowbombing.

“If I’m being perfectly honest, we’d like to see the sales be a little bit stronger. But I think in the events world, that comes with developing a brand and a reputation over time. I think that’s what we’re doing with this Snowbombing event now,” said Kelly. “It’s sort of a long-term play.”

This year’s festival will be headlined by DJ ILLENIUM and legendary hip hop group Cypress Hill.
