Canada’s Minister of Small Business touts Budget 2019 investments at TRU

KAMLOOPS — Canada’s Minister of Small Business visited Kamloops and the TRU campus Tuesday, highlighting budget items that impact students.

Mary Ng pointed to investments to make education more affordable, such as the lowering of interest rates on Canada Student Loans and Canada Apprentice Loans and the elimination of interest during the six-month grace period after graduation.

She also discussed the Canada Training Benefit, which will give workers money to pursue training while keeping their jobs.

“Over a four-year period, you get to take up to four weeks off and in those four weeks you go and upgrade your skills, you go and get training. How does this work? You get up to $250 each of those years, so up to $1,000 over four and you apply that to a course that you want to take to upgrade your skills,” said Ng.
