City’s spring street sweeping getting underway

KAMLOOPS — With winter coming to a close for this year, the City of Kamloops is marching forward with street sweeping.

Streets and Environmental Services Manager Glen Farrow says there are still bits of ice and snow left in some gutters, but they are getting a start on the annual spring cleaning.

“We always start in the lower elevations,” He explains, “So much of the focus in the next couple of weeks will be out in Westsyde, as well as Brock and the North Shore.”

Ideally, Farrow says, the less vehicles left on the roads, the better.

“As well as thing like hockey nets and basketball hoops. The best thing is to keep them on your driveways rather than getting them out anywhere near the road. At this point, keeping them off the road right away is much safer for our operators to get into an area and keep sweeping.”

Even when a sweeper may have left the area, Farrow says that doesn’t mean they won’t be back, with multiple trips sometimes required for certain areas.

Farrow says they’ll also have some new online mapping technology for people to keep up to date on where sweepers will be.

“We’re hoping to release that hopefully next week, we’re just finalizing some finer details on it,” He explains, “What it would be is 3 different colours on a map. Red indicating: ‘We’re a long ways out still’, yellow meaning: ‘In the next couple of weeks we’ll be in your area’, and green is: ‘Your area has been completed and don’t expect us to be back in your area, because we are done’.”

With the potential mapping release, spring cleaning officially gets started on Monday morning.
