Hundreds of safety violations in three-day Southern Interior road blitz

KAMLOOPS — More than 650 traffic tickets have been issued after a road blitz targeting drivers in the Kamloops, Barriere and Chase areas.

Between March 4 to March 6, BC RCMP Traffic Services and Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) officers conducted the blitz along Highways 1, 5 and 5A, with the goal of enhancing road safety.

During the campaign, both commercial and personal vehicles were checked resulting in 655 tickets representing 44 different infractions.

Officers say some of the highlights include:

• Seatbelt violations = 28
• Distracted Driving = 9
• Speeding = 80
• Impaired (alcohol) = 5
• Impaired (drug) = 1
• Open Liquor in Vehicle = 9
• Cannabis Act (Prov) = 2
• Vehicles Impounded = 12
• Prohibited Drivers = 4
• Drug Seizures/Charges = 7
• Licence/Insurance infractions = 42
• Commercial Vehicles inspected = 99
• Commercial Vehicles removed from service = 35

Cpl. Mike Halskov says safety issues impacting commercial vehicles are a major concern.

“Some of these infractions can be fairly minor, but it’s the total amount of infractions that accumulate throughout the inspection that can render a vehicle inoperable. So if the brakes are out of adjustment, for example, or load securement issues or other safety factors that weren’t adhered to, those need to get fixed.”
