Cold snap making its way to Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — It’s been a dry start to December so far, and things will likely stay that way — but temperatures are expected to drop this week.

Bobby Sekhon is a meteorologist with Environment Canada. He says starting mid-week the mercury will be dipping below normal temperatures for this time of year.

“It’s about six degrees below the normal of -5 C as overnight low, so it is going to be quite frosty for this time of year,” Sekhon says of the predicted -11 C forecast for Wednesday and Thursday’s overnight lows.

Things will start to cool off tonight with an overnight low of -5 C, and tomorrow’s overnight low is forecast for -9 C, before temperatures drop even more on Wednesday and Thursday. But this cold snap doesn’t necessarily mean snow.

“This is a mostly dry high-pressure system which is just bringing the cold air basically,” Sekhon says. “There will be some clouds around which you might get a few light flakes out of but nothing in the way of accumulations really. We’re not looking at any snowfall until at least maybe next week so definitely the stretch into the weekend is just going to be cold and dry.”

Sekhon says it’s too soon to say if Kamloops will get a white Christmas, but temperatures for the end of December are expected to be above normal.

“To anybody who’s travelling or going to be out in the elements, just make sure that they’re ready for the shift in the pattern toward cooler weather and have your blankets and emergency kits ready,” he says.
