VERNON, B.C. — Police have arrested a suspect accused of breaking into a Vernon home while the residents were sleeping.

A van and some other items were stolen from a home on Marshall Road last Friday morning (Nov. 16), with the van later found fully engulfed in flames near Okanagan Landing School.

The next day, police tried to arrest a suspect at a drive thru in Okanagan Landing, but he drove over two curbs and sped away.

“Shortly after, the suspect was located a second time in the 4100 block of 24th Avenue, where he fled from police on foot. The suspect male led police on a short pursuit over fences and through a creek where he was ultimately apprehended and taken into custody without injury,” says North Okanagan RCMP Const. Kelly Brett.

25-year-old Sheldon Veness of Vernon — who police call a prolific offender — is facing numerous charges, including arson, break and enter, theft, breach of probation, and dangerous driving.

Veness is being held in custody with a court date today (Nov. 21).

“Numerous police officers were tasked with investigating this particular incident and through that, a suspect was identified as a known prolific offender in the Vernon area. This particular incident is a good example of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP’s commitment to reducing crime through prolific and priority offender management,” says Brett.
