Local CUPW members wait for job action decision as Canada Post offer expires without deal

KAMLOOPS — As the dispute between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is now into its fourth week of rotating strikes, decisions on how to end job action could come some time today.

At midnight, the deadline on the latest offer from Canada Post to end the labour dispute came and went.

Attending a union rally yesterday with some of the Kamloops members, President of the Kamloops Local 758, Kellie Horncastle says the latest offer from Canada Post has been rejected for a number of reasons.

“CUPW rejected the offer from CP as it did not address the Health and Safety concerns,” Horncastle says in a statement, “Canada Post has the hightest injury rate, 5.4 times then any other Federal sector. (Along with) the overburdening of lettercarriers and hours worked/hours paid for RSMC’S (Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers). The more they work, the less pay they receive.”

Horncastle says the latest Canada Post offer has more precarious work outlined, instead of full-time jobs, and the hiring process has not been mentioned.

“Canada Post has to address the way the routes are done,” Horncastle explains, “Making the routes heavier and longer with less employees to deliver is not the way to go.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week if no progress was made, then “all options will be on the table” to end the postal disruptions, as the strikes have resulted in a buildup of undelivered letters and parcels before the holidays.

As for when the rotating strikes will be coming back to Kamloops, Horncastle says no information will be given until later this evening, so CUPW will continue to deliver until they get the call.

“We are fighting for middle income jobs now, and for the future.”
