KAMLOOPS —The Kamloops Academy of Dance has partnered with the Moscow Ballet for the local performance of the Great Russian Nutcracker, giving dance students in the area a unique opportunity.

The children will be able to perform alongside professionals in the Great Russian Nutcracker today, (November 11) at 1:00pm and 5:00pm, at the Sagebrush Theatre.

The opportunity stems from Moscow Ballet’s community engagement program, Dance-with-Us, which brings the historic Russian Vaganova ballet training to kids throughout their North American Tour.

Rehearsals run throughout the fall, where local dance students audition for roles in the Great Russian Nutcracker show.

After they are chosen, the aspiring dancers, ranging in age from 7 to 17, perform in roles developed around their age and skill level by dancer, choreographer and Julliard graduate, Mary Giannone Talmi, who is also a co-producer of Moscow Ballet’s North American tours.

Moscow Ballet tours throughout North American each year, performing shows such as the Great Russian Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, and more.

Anna Profimova is one of the dancers in the performance, and she has been with the Moscow Ballet for the last four years.

“We have two shows of the Great Russian Nutcracker today. Its a very special nutcracker actually, ” She explains, “We have special outfits, large puppets in the second act, and we have a special collective dance with the dancers.”

And that’s not all. The performances also have a fund-raising component for organizations such as hospitals, children’s museums and more.

“We invite you tonight to see one of the greatest shows, the Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker. Enjoy the show!”
