Annual 4-20 celebration in Kamloops today

KAMLOOPS — It’s party time for pot smokers in Kamloops.

The annual 4-20 celebration will take place in Riverside Park from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Scores of marijuana enthusiasts will gather for the event — the final one prior to the legalization of the drug in Canada this summer.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says police response to the event will be the same as in previous years.

“We’re going to have extra patrols out in vehicles around Riverside Park,” said Shelkie. “We won’t be doing any foot patrols unless we’re called on for a specific event that happens and then we’ll deal with each file accordingly and on a case-by-case basis.”

But Shelkie says if previous 4-20 gatherings are any indication, they’re not expecting any issues this year.

She says officers’ chief concern will be impaired driving after the event.
