HAZELTON – A new two-lane bridge on Highway 37 is scheduled to be built across the Nass River, replacing the current one-lane bridge downstream. East of Stewart, the new bridge will allow heavier commercial vehicles across, along with shoulders for pedestrians and cyclists.

“Replacing this single-lane bridge from 1956 with a new two-lane bridge will greatly improve safety and mobility for people in the region,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “The new bridge will be built to modern standards and help keep traffic flowing smoothly along Highway 37, a key north-south connection for British Columbians and our resource sectors.”

Traffic will be able to travel at 90 km/h instead of 30 km/h, because of the new design. A rest area will be placed on the east side of the bridge with a new viewpoint and washroom facilities.

“Replacing this bridge is vital to support the region’s growing forestry and mining industries,” said Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development MLA for Stikine.
