KAMLOOPS — Merritt RCMP Sgt. Norm Flemming has been charged with assault.

It's in relation to an incident that occurred at the Merritt RCMP detachment on May 15, 2017. Flemming will make his first court appearance Dec. 5 in Merritt Provincial Court.

"The charge was approved by an experienced Crown Counsel located in a different area of the province than the officer under investigation, and who has no prior or current connection with this officer," says the BC Prosecution Service.

No further details on the case are being released at this time.

UPDATE: RCMP E-Division spokesperson S/Sgt. Annie Linteau says Sgt. Flemming remains "operational" and has not been suspended.
